At Volies, we have witnessed the changes and evolution that corporate volunteering has undergone in recent years, and what this has meant for organizations, communities, and, of course, for every person who makes it possible. Developing a corporate volunteering strategy has been one of the most recurring advances in recent years, a sign of greater maturity within the sector.
Today, many companies have well-established programs with a strong track record and measurable impact. However, the organizational, social, and strategic changes these companies face invite them to pause and reflect.
This is why even the most consolidated volunteering programs need to stop, review the context, and rethink their corporate volunteering strategy so they can continue being the driving force for impact they aspire to be. It is not about starting from scratch, but about giving the program new momentum through a renewed perspective.
Banamex’s corporate volunteering strategy
For Banamex, this new institutional stage raised new questions. As the organization entered a new phase, its social programs also needed to go through a process of reflection and review. This demonstrated that strong volunteering programs are not necessarily static, they evolve alongside the organization itself.
Hacer buenas preguntas para seguir avanzando
Some of the questions raised included:
- Does the program still respond to the current context?
- Is it aligned with the new priorities?
- How can it generate even greater social and organizational value?
These and many other questions were essential to gaining a deep understanding of the program’s reality and establishing a starting point to rethink its corporate volunteering strategy.
Within this process, actively listening to the different internal stakeholders connected to the program was key. Through interviews, we gathered perceptions, learnings, and insights from their experiences. By the end of the exercise, we were able to identify strengths, detect opportunities for improvement, and understand the new challenges Banamex would face.
New opportunities to discover
It is common to find that the programs with the longest trajectory are also the ones with the greatest potential to evolve and take on new challenges. And this was the case for Banamex. After reviewing the program, analyzing its journey, and listening to different stakeholders, the organization was able to look at it with fresh eyes and identify opportunities that had previously gone unnoticed.
- A comprehensive analysis of the program
- Its strategic alignment
- Its participation model
- The impact generated
- Its governance model
- Its partnerships, among others
This resulted in a strategic analysis that truly aligned with the bank’s purpose while also contributing to this new institutional stage.
Pausing to move forward
This strategic review was not a step backward, but rather a pause to prepare for a new leap in impact and progress.
When a company takes the time to review and thoroughly analyze its volunteering program, it is a sign of program maturity. It allows organizations to update their purpose, strengthen participation, build identity, and ultimately contribute to greater impact.
Finally, these strategic review exercises can serve as inspiration for other organizations with established programs and a desire to improve. They invite organizations to rethink their approach and ask themselves: Does our program respond to the current context? Is it aligned with the organization’s strategy? What opportunities for evolution might exist?
Pausing to reflect is a fundamental part of the journey toward a stronger program. The power of strategic reflection lies in opening new possibilities to multiply impact.
