At this time when tragedy has hit us so directly due to the hurricane, the solidarity of so many people is the best way to recover materially and emotionally.
But it is very important to take into account a series of questions in order to be really useful and avoid being more of a problem than a solution.
Of course, follow the indications of the authorities and try to offer help through the existing official channels. We must be aware of the needs and offer the help that is being demanded in each place and at each precise moment.
In any case, even if we organize ourselves, it is very important to take care of a series of details:
- Situation assessment and task design. Before the volunteers start working, they must be very clear about the tasks they will perform. Obviously in a confusing situation they are unlikely to be very clear, but initial needs should be identified and updated as necessary.
- Volunteer briefings. Volunteers should be given minimal training or guidelines as to what they will encounter and what their tasks are. It is important that all volunteers participate in briefings before they begin work.
- Leading and managing volunteers. All volunteers should have a group leader who is responsible for the group’s activities and the well-being of the volunteers. This person should be responsible for:
- That the volunteering is done in a safe manner.
- Updating the volunteers with new information.
- Gathering information for reporting to authorities.
- Of course, the appropriate level of supervision will depend on the task the volunteer is being asked to perform and the level of previous experience the volunteer has.
- Providing appropriate equipment. To enable volunteers to perform their tasks efficiently and safely.
- Appreciation and recognition. Thank volunteers at the end for their activity.
